Ankara welcomes 2nd Şefika Kutluer Festival

23 September 2011 / TODAY’S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
The second International Şefika Kutluer Festival is set to get off to a sparkling start on Saturday evening with a joint concert courtesy of flutist Şefika Kutluer and the Le Mans Symphony Orchestra from France at Ankara’s State Art and Culture Museum.

An event taking place with the support of the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, the festival, which will present seven classical concerts under the theme of “East meets West,” is set to continue through Oct. 27, the Anatolia news agency reported on Thursday.

Nicknamed the “magic flutist,” Ankara-born Kutluer explained in press statements that the festival’s theme of “East meets West” was selected with the hope that the festival can bridge Turkey’s eastern and western regions. Kutluer further stated that the festival’s second concert, scheduled for the anniversary of the birth of the great Sufi master Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi on Sept. 30, will feature a performance of the well-known nasheed (religious song) “Uyan Ey Gözlerim” (Awaken Eyes of Mine) in his memory.

According to statements from the municipality, acts to perform as part of the festival include internationally acclaimed acts such as the world-famous Swiss chamber orchestra Festival Strings Luzerne, the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra from Russia, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Jilin Traditional Chinese Orchestra hailing from the Far East.

The proceeds of the concert from acclaimed Russian ensemble the Kremlin Chamber Orchestra on Oct. 4 will be donated towards the humanitarian efforts in Somalia.
