A soldier who was kidnapped by terrorists from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır in August was released on Monday by the PKK.

Pvt. Aykut Çelik was kidnapped by the PKK along with a candidate for district governor and a medic on Aug. 12 earlier this year. The private Cihan news agency said he was released near the Silvan district early on Monday.

The PKK, which has recently stepped up its attacks in the country's east and Southeast, has killed more than 40 soldiers in the past few months and kidnapped several people. The PKK has been declared a terrorist organization by the international community, including the US and the EU.
