Unemployed teachers stage protests across Turkey

19 September 2011 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Teachers who were not assigned a post by the Education Ministry for the new school term staged protests on Sunday across Turkey.

In İstanbul teachers organized via social media and gathered in Taksim Square to show their resentment towards the government. Carrying blackboards, teachers chanted: “We don't want charity but an appointment to a post. Teachers are unemployed and schools are without teachers." Some Republican People's Party (CHP) deputies attended the protest as well, toting placards that condemned the government for failing to appoint such a large number of teachers despite a shortage of personnel in the Turkish education system.

Bringing their children to the square, the teachers staged the protest in front of Galatasaray High School on İstiklal Street in İstanbul's Taksim district. They objected to temporary service contracts and demanded permanent appointments.
