Columnist Hıncal Uluç, who has been sued for comments he made regarding the death of a Turkish-American TV host, was sentenced to pay TL 20,000 in damages by an İstanbul civil court on Monday.

Defne Joy Foster was a famous TV host, actress and former VJ who died seven months ago at a friend's house in İstanbul. It took months for the autopsy report to be issued, the findings of which suggested that alcohol reacted with her medication, killing Foster, who also suffered from asthma.

Foster's family sued Sabah columnist Uluç for TL 100,000 in damages in April after Uluç wrote about Foster's death two days after she was found dead at her friend's house, saying that she “fell on her words.”

Uluç said in his column: “A cheated husband and a forgotten child. No one should expect me to respect such a person just because she is dead.”
