Fenerbahçe Deputy Chairman Nihat Özdemir on Thursday announced that he resigned from his post, a decision which comes on the heels of a decision by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) to bar the club from this season's Champions League over match-fixing allegations involving the club.
TFF said it made the decision following pressure from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). Özdemir protested the decision on Wednesday on a television program and asked TFF Chairman Mehmet Ali Aydınlar to relegate Fenerbahçe to the second division.
Fenerbahçe, the team which is at the center of the match-fixing allegations that concern two Turkish soccer leagues, is reportedly pondering withdrawing from the first division. Reports say a group of Fenerbahçe administrators will ask the club's jailed Chairman Aziz Yıldırım to have the last say on the issue. They were scheduled to pay a visit to Yıldırm in Metris Prison on Thursday.
