Galatasaray Lions go down fighting at Real's Bernabeu

25 August 2011 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The Galatasaray Lions squandered an early lead to eventually lose 2-1 away to Real Madrid in the 33rd Santiago Bernabeu Tournament at the famous Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid on Wednesday night.

Attacking midfielder Selçuk İnan, who signed as a free agent from Trabzonspor in the pre-season, put the Lions 1-0 up after only 10 minutes in the warm-up game. But Galatasaray could not prevent goals by 25-year-old Spain defender Sergio Ramos in the 33rd and Lyon-born France striker Karim Benzema in the 50th, thus allowing the Spanish side to carry the day.

The Lions, however, can take heart because they went down fighting on the road against Jose Mourinho's Real -- one of the most expensively assembled teams on the face of the earth.

Injured Turkey international midfielders Hamit Altıntop and Nuri Şahin were not in Real's line-up, but they were presented to the Bernabeu crowd, with Hamit wearing the No. 16 jersey and Nuri wearing Zinedine Zidane's No. 5 shirt. Real's German-Turkish winger Mesut Özil played for 87 minutes.
