19 August 2011 / TODAYSZAMAN.COM WITH WIRES,
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s visit to famine-stricken Somalia got off to a rough start on Friday when the wing of a plane carrying a delegation accompanying the prime minister scraped the tarmac while landing at Mogadishu airport.

The passengers, including singers Sertab Erener and Ajda Pekkan, businessmen and journalists, were unhurt but the plane was damaged as unfit to fly the delegation back, Anatolia news agency said. A journalist on board the Turkish Airlines plane said the incident caused screams and panic.

Erdoğan and his family flew in the official state jet and were not affected.

Erdoğan, accompanied by four Cabinet ministers, plans to visit relief camps and hospitals to draw international attention to the East African country's drought and famine situation.

Earlier this week, Turkey held a summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries, which gave it a chance to display Islamic piety and flex its diplomatic muscle in Africa at a time other emerging powers are also scrambling for trade and investment in the resource-rich continent. The countries have pledged $350 million in aid to fight famine in the troubled Horn of Africa nation.
