“What Turkey has done [sets] an example. Look at all the reforms that the governing party has [implemented]. A silent revolution has taken place which has proved that democracy and Islam can be reconciled and work hand in hand. It has brought dignity to all the Muslims in Turkey,” Jagland said on Thursday on an interview at FRANCE 24, an international news channel.
Jagland added that “this silent revolution has been quite important” in relation to “what is happening in the Mediterranean,” and continued:
“Europe and the United States should appreciate more this deep silent revolution that has brought dignity, reconciled democracy and Islam in Turkey and which should be brought to the wider Middle East. I believe that Europe and the US should bring Turkey on board much more when it comes to peace efforts in the Middle East,” he said.
Jagland also said that it not possible to have peace in the region without “major player” Turkey:
“I fail to see how one can make peace without the [involvement of] major players in the whole region. Turkey is not only a major player but has shown the world that Islam can be reconciled with democracy.”
When it comes to Turkey’s deficiencies Jagland said that there is more to be done to improve democratic developments in the country including efforts to shorten the length of pretrial detention.
“You can’t have a system in which you have 10-year period of pre-detention. This is not something we have in Europe and should be looked into,” he said.
