US ambassador says Turkey’s democracy an inspiration for ME
“Everyone can take lessons from Turkey’s experience,” Ricciardone told reporters in Turkish ahead of a US Independence Day reception in the southern city of Adana. Ricciardone, who served at the US Consulate in Adana 32 years, added that he was pleased to return to Adana after so many years.
When asked about the unrest in Syria, Ricciardone said the US is acting hand-in-hand with the Turkish government on this issue and urged the Syrian authorities to enact serious reforms. He also asked the Syrian government to avoid violence.
“Syria’s case is different from that of Libya, Egypt, Iraq and Iran. Everybody, each community, needs to finds its own path to democracy. We will support them if those communities, those states, choose that path,” he added, as quoted by the Anatolia news agency.
