Mardin unrolls red carpet for 6th film festival

23 June 2011 / TODAY’S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
The Turkish city of Mardin is turning into a regional cinema hub this week as the southeastern Anatolian province, famed for its historic sandstone houses, kicks off the sixth edition of its annual international film festival, SineMardin, on Friday.

The 6th SineMardin, which will run through June 30, will get under way with an opening ceremony at Mardin’s Sabancı Municipal Museum, the Anatolia news agency reported on Thursday.

World-famous Iranian filmmaker Bahman Ghobadi is the special guest of this year’s festival. The 42-year-old Ghobadi is presenting four of his films for Mardin festival-goers, including “No One Knows about Persian Cats,” his moving semi-fictional drama which won a special jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009.

This year’s SineMardin, held under the main theme of “authority,” is introducing numerous firsts, including a program called Children’s Films on Wheels, a screening program that will travel the districts of the Mardin province, and a screening of award-winning titles in the Iraqi city of Arbil that will run concurrently with the main program in Mardin. The festival is also holding screenplay workshops.

Admission to all events in the lineup is free.
