Death toll rises to four in alcohol poisoning case as one more Russian tourist dies

Another Russian tourist died of alcohol poisoning in Turkey on Monday, bringing the number of Russian deaths caused by alcohol poisoning on a yacht tour organized by a local company in Turkey to four since late last month.

News reports said the fourth tourist, Alexandr Zhbckov (28), died in a Denizli hospital where he had been receiving treatment.

Twenty-one Russian tourists visiting the popular Turkish Aegean resort of Bodrum were reported to have been hospitalized late last month with symptoms of severe alcohol poisoning after a yacht tour organized by a local company.

Three of the tourists died by Monday. One woman, Maria Shalyapina, 28, died at the Bodrum State Hospital as doctors were unable to stabilize her condition, while another, Aigul Zalayeva, 20, died one day after her in a hospital in Antalya. The third victim was Marina Shevelyova, 22 and she died at a hospital in Moscow. Five other tourists are still receiving treatment in hospitals in Antalya and two were in critical condition. One of them died on Monday, becoming the fourth victim.

Russian officials have filed a lawsuit against the Turkish company that organized the yacht cruise. Vladimir Markin reportedly told the Russian Interfax news agency that a lawsuit was filed against the Turkish company under Article 238 Part 1 and Part 2 of the Russian Criminal Code for the production and sale of food products, which allegedly did not meet safety requirements.

Russian travel agencies have also reportedly filed a lawsuit against the company.
