Come one and all to a traditional British summer fete

1 June 2011 / VIRGINIA LOWE , İSTANBUL
British fetes are family-oriented outdoor activities based on centuries of English village traditions designed to bring the community together.

İstanbul's version of the summer fete was started in the 1950s by the Anglican Church and now continues under the sponsorship of the British Community Council (BCC) in conjunction with the British Consulate. Formed in 1942 to represent all sections of the British community in İstanbul, today the BCC is also registered with the Charity Commissioners in England, providing support for seven British pensioners and aid to a variety of İstanbul charities. This year's main fund-raiser, the annual British Summer Fete, happens on Saturday, June 11, from 12 to 5:00 p.m. Join the festivities at the British Consulate General garden, Meşrutiyet Cd. No: 34, Tepebaşı, İstanbul.

Be sure not to have lunch before joining the fun. Instead, head for the full outdoor food court where you can munch to your heart's content. Burgers and sausages complete with tasty toppings will be available, in addition to a sandwich stand awaiting those who are longing for a taste of the common truck driver's fare, which Prince Harry ordered for the late night guests lingering at his brother William's recent royal wedding. Sample the variety of international foods for sale by Dolfin Gıda. Thirsty fete-goers can wet their whistle in the tea garden and at the Pimms' stall.

Adults of all nationalities will enjoy the multitude of traditional British stalls. Groups from all around İstanbul are represented with both new and second-hand book stalls, arts and crafts displays, handcrafted jewelry stalls and more. An annual favorite is the white elephant stall where folks donate items for which they have no use, but which someone else is tempted to take home as a treasure.

Children of all ages can have a fun-packed afternoon. In addition to the ever popular face-painting booth, young folk can join in a variety of races and games for different age groups. Parents might want to come prepared for the kids' fancy dress competition.

As families stroll around the fete grounds, they can listen to delightful background music provided courtesy of Joy FM. For folks more inclined to live entertainment, don't miss the performance of the dynamic group, Yabancı Değiliz.

Last but not least, there is a grand raffle with some seriously super prizes. Register to win two return tickets to London courtesy of British Airways, a two nights' stay at the W Hotel, a painting by an expatriate artist and much more. All proceeds from the raffle and fete-sponsored events go to charities supported by the BCC.

This year's organizer, Ayfer Akyürek, is hoping for a great turn-out from the British community, expatriates of all nationalities and Turks alike, so come and help make her hard work pay off.

Entrance is by advance-purchased ticket only at a cost of TL 10 for adults and TL 5 for children under 12; children under two years of age are admitted free. The 1,300 available tickets can be purchased before June 9 at Greenhouse Bookshop: Dumlupınar Sok. No: 17 Caferağa Mah. Kadıköy; Homer Books: Yeni Çarşı Caddesi No:12/A, 34433 Galatasaray; James Joyce: İstiklal Cad. Balo Sok. No: 26 Beyoglu; Java Café: Binbirdirek Mah.
