9 May 2011 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A bus drove into a ditch on the side of the road and overturned, leaving two dead and 51 injured on Sunday in İzmir's Seferihisar district.

Travelling on the bus were students from Dokuz Eylül University, returning from the university's spring festivities and an awards ceremony. Pakize Ecem Korkmaz, a female footballer who played in the Turkish woman's league, and Alper Pekgürler, another Dokuz Eylül University student, died at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the bus fled the scene. However, gendarmes from Seferihisar later detained the driver, who was reported to have no major injuries.

The injured were later taken to Dokuz Eylül University Hospital, İzmir's Atatürk Teaching and Research Hospital and Tepeçik Teaching and Research Hospital. The hospitals have confirmed that the injured are all in stable condition.
