Hatay man kills two policemen, commits suicide
Hatay Governor Mehmet Celalettin Lekesiz told reporters that Yusuf Gezer had opened fire on his neighbors with a pump rifle after quarreling with them over an unknown reason, injuring Mehmet Tatar and Besime Aşkar.
Lekesiz said police arrived at the scene after some of the neighbors informed them about the incident. “Officer İsmail Gündüz died after Gezer shot him, disobeying police calls to put down his weapon. The other officer, Coşkun Akşit, was heavily injured in the standoff. He was immediately taken to Antakya State Hospital, but doctors were unable to save him. The suspect, Gezer, also died after committing suicide with the same rifle. Our two officers died for nothing. Tatar and Aşkar are doing well,” the governor said.
Funerals will be held for the two police officers on Tuesday.
