Turkey debates bypassing Bosporus Strait

29 April 2011 / AP, ANKARA
Turks are debating whether a 1936 treaty that governs shipping in the Bosporus Strait will disrupt ambitious government plans to build an alternative canal linking the Mediterranean Sea and the Black Sea.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan this week announced plans to build a canal to bypass the Bosporus and eliminate the risk of accidents in the heavily congested waterway that bisects İstanbul.

Turkey wants to reduce the shipment of oil, liquefied gas and chemicals through the Bosporus. The Montreux Convention of 1936, however, requires Turkey to allow commercial ships through the strait.
