Syrian ambassador says Syria's transformation should be in line with nation's demands

20 April 2011 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, ANKARA
The Syrian ambassador in the Turkish capital said on Wednesday that the transformation process in Syria should be conducted in line with the nation's demands and in a peaceful way.

Commenting on the latest developments in Syria in an interview with the Anatolia news agency, ambassador Nidal Kabalan said the new government in Syria had taken action to meet the demands of the Syrian people.

Kabalan said yesterday's lifting of the emergency rule in the country, as well as transition to multi-party system and a law on media were some of those demands.

The ambassador said Syria needed a reform process, and everybody, including President Bashar al-Asad, supported reforms, however, what was not needed in the country at the moment were violent acts.

Noting that demands for reforms should be voiced in a peaceful way, Kabalan said those waging attacks against Syria's army and committing murders were considered just like PKK terrorists.

Kabalan noted that a new era of reforms had begun for Syria and all segments of the society were excited about the process.

The ambassador also said violence should be stopped in order to ensure the effective implementation of reforms.

Regarding the role Turkey may play in the ongoing process in Syria, Kabalan said his country was thankful for Turkey's support on the matter and it was eager to benefit from Turkey's experiences concerning the multi-party parliamentarian system.
