Industrial turnover index up by nearly 30 pct in February

13 April 2011 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkey’s industrial turnover index increased by 29.7 percent in February over the previous year, the Turkish Statistics Institute (TurkStat) announced on Tuesday.

According to TurkStat, the index’s rise in February over January was recorded at 3.5 percent. Of the separately analyzed sub-indexes, the biggest increase was seen in the mining index, which surged by over 45 percent in February 2011 compared to the same month last year. It was followed by the manufacturing index’s rise of 29.2 percent, the institution said. Among the manufacturing industries, the biggest leap was observed in tobacco production, at 69.5 percent.

On Wednesday TurkStat also released the industrial orders index, which, according to the institute, rose by 32.4 percent over a year ago and 6 percent over January. These increases signal to markets that Turkey’s economy is on track for sustainable growth after last year’s noteworthy 8.9 percent growth.
