Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yıldız, Environment and Forestry Minister Veysel Eroğlu, Education Minister Nimet Çubukçu, Industry and Trade Minister Nihat Ergün, Sabancı Holding Chairwoman Güler Sabancı and Verbund Board Member Ulrike Baumgartner-Gabitzer participated at the opening ceremony of the Hacınınoğlu Hydroelectric Power Plant in Kahramanmaraş on Sunday.
Speaking at the ceremony, Sabancı said 2011 will be a year in which her group will invest heavily in the energy sector. She noted that Sabancı Holding is moving toward being the leading holding in the Turkish energy sector. EnerjiSA invested about 120 million euros in the 142-megawatt Hacınınoğlu Hydroelectric Power Plant. “2011 will be a year in which EnerjiSA will invest more in sustainable energy projects. We will also put the 85-megawatt Menge Dam into service at the end of this year and the 39-megawatt Dağpazarı Wind Farm in 2012,” Sabancı said.
Meanwhile, Verbund’s Gabitzer told the public this is the first time an international partnership invested such a large amount of money in the Turkish energy sector. “Our goal is to produce clean energy for the Turkish industry and private sector,” she said. “We opened our first wind farm in Çanakkale province one month ago. Today, we are here to open the first hydroelectric power plant out of the many other hydroelectric power plants we plan to open in Turkey in the future.”
The Hacınınoğlu power plant is located in the upper Ceyhan River basin. The plant is expected to produce 379 gigawatts of energy per year, an amount equal to 10 percent of the province’s energy needs. EnerjiSA’s hydroelectric power plant will also produce 3 percent of the electricity produced by private hydroelectric power plants in the country.
Other EnerjiSA investments in the region are the Sarıgüzel Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant (103 megawatts), the Kandil Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant (214 megawatts) and the Dağdelen Regulator and Hydroelectric Power Plant (8 megawatts).
The Sabancı Group has identified the energy sector as a key area for growth within its strategic plans for 2015, with a focus on electricity and downstream natural gas operations. Consequently, the group intends to lead in the electricity market and has established an ambitious target to command a 10 percent market share of the electricity sector by 2015 as a leading player.
In May 2007 the group signed a joint venture agreement with Verbund, one of the leading electric companies in Europe. The agreement is based on an equal share and management principle. Verbund is Austria’s largest generator of electricity and one of the most valuable companies. Sabancı and Verbund will work together and exclusively within all areas of the Turkish electricity sector, except for nuclear energy investments.
Planning to attain a total installed capacity of 5,000 megawatts by 2015, the Sabancı Energy Group continues to expand and diversify its generation portfolio under the scope of the Verbund partnership at a fast pace.
