Zekeriya Öz, the chief prosecutor involved in the investigation into the Ergenekon terrorist organization, on Thursday met with Philip Heymann, the special prosecutor in the Watergate scandal.
The Watergate scandal was a political scandal during the 1970s in the United States that resulted in the resignation of a US president for the first time in American history. The meeting between Öz and Heymann came on Thursday during the latter’s visit to İstanbul. The two ate lunch at Bahçeşehir University and later visited İstanbul Deputy Chief Prosecutor Turan Çolakkadı. Öz is currently working on Turkey’s largest investigation ever, Ergenekon, which aims to expose Turkey’s dark past. Ergenekon is a clandestine criminal gang charged with plotting to overthrow the government. It is believed to have roots in the military, academia and the media. Dozens of its suspected members are currently in prison on coup and terror charges. Many people believe dark incidents in Turkey’s past will be illuminated if the Ergenekon investigation is successfully completed.
