İbrahim Tatlıses
19 March 2011 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The Kalashnikov rifle that was used in the attempted assassination of singer İbrahim Tatlıses was found in the surrounds of the Ömerli reservoir on Thursday night.

Ballistics carried out on the rifle revealed that the weapon was the one used in Monday night’s shooting, which occurred as Tatlıses was leaving a television network’s building.

Police first found the abandoned rented car and then subsequently the assault weapon used in the attack by tracking the GPS signals from the automobile. One of these signals came from the vicinity of the Ömerli reservoir at 1:07 a.m. Teams who searched the area found the rifle.

The police department’s anti-smuggling and organized crime unit has detained 20 people in connection with the Tatlıses shooting.

Police conducted 32 raids at various locations in order to capture the suspects. They are now continuing their questioning.

Tatlıses miraculously survived the attack, in which 11 bullets were fired from the assailant’s rifle. Four of the bullets hit him in the head. His condition improved steadily after a number of operations following the attack. His doctors now report that the course of his physiotherapy and rehabilitation has begun.
