In the campaign, jointly organized by Kızılay and Yıldız Technical University (YTÜ) and sponsored by Metro Tourism, around 1,000 students from 81 provinces across Turkey arrived at the Gallipoli Peninsula on Thursday.
The official launch was held in a tent pitched on the peninsula, beginning with a minute of silence in remembrance of the fallen.
YTÜ Chancellor İsmail Yüksek drew attention to the importance of the campaign on the centenary of the university’s establishment.
“This campaign is one of the many social responsibility projects that the university is undertaking in its 100th year. The project was realized as a result of students exploring the ways in which they could fulfill Turkey’s need for close to 2 million units of blood,” Yüksek said. Gallipoli’s Assistant Governor Cemal Yıldızer addressed the audience and described Gallipoli as a precious place whose name was etched in the pages of history with the blood of those who gave their lives there. He said that in 1915 youths from all parts of Turkey sacrificed their lives, shedding their blood on its soil to defend their nation, without hesitation.
In his official address, Kızılay President Tekin Küçükali thanked all those who assisted in bringing thousands of students to Gallipoli and made reference to a $4.5 million blood donation facility that will be constructed in Samsun, with the sponsorship of Metro Tourism.
The campaign carries the slogan, “Can this blood ever forget you?” playing on the title of a famous Turkish song “Can this heart ever forget you?”
In a written statement prior to the launch, Kızılay said that they would participate in this year’s commemorations of the Turkish Armed Forces’ victory in the Battle of Gallipoli in a unique way, with members of the Kızılay Youth Branch inviting 250,000 people to give blood in memory of Gallipoli’s 250,00 fallen.
