Turkish Airlines orders 13 new aircraft from Airbus

10 March 2011 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Airbus, one of the world's leading aircraft manufacturers, has announced that Turkish Airlines (THY) has signed an order for the purchase of 10 A321s and three A330-200F freighter aircraft.

According to a written statement released by Airbus on Wednesday, THY has a further 27 aircraft on order with Airbus from contracts signed in 2009 and 2010 to meet THY's growth plans in both the passenger and cargo markets. The new aircraft will join THY's existing fleet of 75 Airbus aircraft, including four A310 freighters, 50 A320-family aircraft, 11 A330s, one A330-200F and nine A340s.

“To achieve our ambitious expansion plans in a sustainable and profitable manner, we require a reliable and efficient fleet,” said Temel Kotil, CEO of THY. “Our positive experience with our in-service A320 fleet and the outstanding flexibility and efficiency demonstrated by our A330-200F since it entered into service last year made these repeat orders the logical choice for our growth,” he added.

The statement also featured Airbus CEO John Leahy’s comments on the agreed sale of 13 aircraft to THY. “We are delighted that Turkish Airlines, the fastest growing airline in Europe, has again chosen Airbus as a partner for their growth,” he said.

‘THY one of the most beautiful signs of a growing Turkey’

In the meantime, President Abdullah Gül praised the THY’s performance in the past couple of years during a visit to the company’s headquarters in İstanbul on Tuesday. He said the airline has become “one of the most beautiful signs of the growing Turkey.” Speaking at a press conference after his visit, Gül said he is proud of THY’s flights across Turkey and around the world, which he described as “providing modern flight opportunities to all Turks.”

Gül said: “[An] increase in the number of people travelling by plane [in Turkey] and the good numbers for THY flights fill us with pride. THY has special importance for Turkish foreign policy. During my time as foreign minister, the ministry and THY had been working together to assign new flight destinations. Now, Turkish people can fly from Brazil to Africa, from the Pacific to the Far East, from Russia to Europe, as well as to the western part of the United States. We are proud to see the Turkish flag in the sky and in all airports around the world.”

After noting that aviation is a difficult sector in which to operate, Gül also said: “Aviation is a fully professional sector in which it is necessary to work very carefully and without error. THY makes it possible not only for Turks but also for people from Asia, Africa or anywhere else to fly to all corners of the world. We hope to see its achievements continue.”

Following his visit, THY Chairman Hamdi Topçu and Kotil presented Gül with a THY plane model, a football signed by Manchester United’s soccer team players and Barcelona and Manchester United’s football uniforms. THY is the official sponsor of both of these two world-famous clubs. İstanbul Today’s Zaman
