Turkey to export locomotives jointly produced with GE

1 March 2011 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkey’s Locomotive and Engine Industry Corporation (TÜLOMSAŞ) and the US-based General Electric (GE) Transportation introduced a high technology locomotive manufactured in Turkey on Monday in Eskişehir.

PowerHaul series locomotives, jointly produced by TÜLOMSAŞ and GE Transportation, are driven by the 16-cylinder PowerHaul engine, which is GE’s most technologically advanced locomotive engine to date. This new engine combined with other technologies from GE is projected to reduce PowerHaul locomotive fuel use by up to 9 percent compared to current operating fleet averages.

GE Transportation aims to reach the North African and Middle Eastern locomotive markets via Turkey. “The PowerHaul locomotive will serve railway customers in this region. It will also increase employment and infrastructure in Turkey,” President and CEO of GE Transportation Lorenzo Simonelli said in a statement to the Anatolia news agency. TÜLOMSAŞ General Director and chairman of the board Hayri Avcı noted that with the current partnership, TÜLOMSAŞ and GE Transportation have merged their technologic and locomotive production expertise.

TÜLOMSAŞ in 2008 signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement with General Electric to manufacture high technology diesel locomotives in Turkey and export them overseas.
