Stockbreeding to be subsidized TL 1.7 bln

23 February 2011 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, ANKARA
Agriculture and Rural Affairs Minister Mehdi Eker said on Tuesday that government subsidies for animal husbandry will be TL 1.7 billion ($1.1 billion) this year, marking a 35 percent increase over last year’s subsidies.

At a press briefing yesterday in Ankara, Eker said a Cabinet decision on a TL 440 million increase in subsidies was taken to extend more financial support to meat and milk producers around the country. A total of TL 390 million of this amount will be spent on subsidies for livestock breeding, while the remaining TL 50 million has been earmarked for dry milk exports. In the face decreasing milk prices that have hit producers, the government has subsidized the production of dry milk in the past two years, Eker reiterated, adding that this year it will financially support the production of 38,000 tons of dry milk as well.
