Not losing sight of nation would solve judicial problems

15 January 2011 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A member of the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK) has said that if judges make their decisions without alienating themselves from the people and without treating the people as the “other,” many of the problems facing the judiciary would be resolved by themselves.

HSYK 1st Chamber member İsmail Aydın, speaking in Edirne yesterday in one of a series of formal meetings of members of the judiciary to analyze the current state of affairs in the judiciary, said, “There is no doubt that if we don't alienate ourselves from the Turkish nation and see it as the other when ruling on behalf of the nation, many problems will start to be resolved.”

Sixty-five judges and prosecutors from Çanakkale, Kırklareli, Tekirdağ and Edirne as well as three justice ministry representatives and HSYK members Aydın and 3rd Chamber member Rasim Aytin took part in the meeting.

The Justice Academy and the HSYK organize these meeting jointly to identify problems in the judiciary and problems with judges and prosecutors and to develop a roadmap to solve these problems.

Aydın said in his speech that in a general sense, the primary duty of jurists is to make sure that justice is done. He said: “The way to realize justice is to be effective, fast and fair. As clearly expressed in Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights and in Article 141/4 of our Constitution, the task of the judiciary is to complete trials at the fastest possible speed and at the lowest possible expense.”

The next meeting of judges and prosecutors will be in Çeşme. Such meetings are being held in 16 regions in Turkey.
