University volunteers tutor disadvantaged in social responsibility project

7 December 2010 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
More than 150 students are tutoring students who cannot afford to take lessons at dersanes, private educational institutions that prepare students for tests, as part of a social responsibility project launched by a student group at Konya's Selçuk University.

The student group initiated the project for volunteer tutors in 2004. Project administrator İsmail Kavak told the Anatolia news agency that more than 150 university students volunteer to tutor at selected schools where underprivileged students study.

“Those who want to volunteer apply through a form, and we appoint them to schools as tutors,” Kavak said.

The volunteers currently give tutoring in math, science, Turkish, social science and English at two primary and secondary schools in Konya's Meram and Karatay districts. The classes also include extra-curricular activities such as painting, folk dance, theater, music and photography.

“Seventy percent of the students at these schools cannot afford to go to dersanes. Sometimes even students who can go to dersanes attend our classes. We don't stop at tutoring within the curriculum; we help students with self-improvement as well. We assist about 300 students over the course of a year. Reviewing the subjects they study on weekdays helps them get a better grasp of the lessons,” Kavak explained.

He also added that they have provided tutoring at six schools thus far.
