Doctor testifies in Haberal health probe

Professor Mehmet Haberal
7 December 2010 / TODAY'SZAMAN, İSTANBUL
A doctor at the İstanbul University Cardiology Institute testified to a civilian prosecutor at the Beşiktaş Courthouse on Monday as part of an ongoing investigation into the status of the health of Professor Mehmet Haberal, the former rector of Başkent University, who is a prime suspect in the Ergenekon case.

Haberal is currently receiving treatment at the institute due to complaints of chest pain.

Ergenekon is a crime network with alleged links to the state and is suspected of plotting to topple the government. The professor was arrested last year on charges of membership in Ergenekon, but he has not spent a single day in prison, arguing that his health precludes incarceration.

İstanbul Specially Authorized Public Prosecutor Fikret Seçen launched a probe into the health of Haberal last week, following the emergence of an earlier health report stating that Haberal would not require further medical attention at the hospital and could continue treatment as an outpatient.

Dr. Cengiz Türkoğlu arrived at the Beşiktaş Courthouse in the early morning hours and told reporters that he would testify as a witness in the probe. No details regarding Türkoğlu's testimony were available at the time Today's Zaman went to print.

Six other doctors testified as part of the same probe last week.
