Erdoğan sues CHP, Kılıçdaroğlu over insults

3 November 2010 / TODAY'S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Tuesday sued the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and its leader, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, over two separate incidents.

Erdoğan is filing a lawsuit against the CHP due to an exhibition at the party's headquarters in Ankara from Oct. 29-Nov. 2 in which a number of cartoons accused Erdoğan -- as well as a handful of other leading political figures including President Abdullah Gül -- of nepotism, corruption and treason to the motherland.

The exhibition was closed on Monday upon a direct order from Kılıçdaroğlu over reactions received from lawyers and retired prosecutors.

Erdoğan, however, became angry at Kılıçdaroğlu personally over the CHP leader's remarks about him on Monday. Speaking at his party's parliamentary group meeting, Kılıçdaroğlu called Erdoğan “a hypocrite, spineless and dishonored” among other offensive labels.

Erdoğan is seeking TL 100,000 in compensation for Kılıçdaroğlu's comments.
