Chain of negligence leads to meat scandal

The whereabouts of more than 11 tons of contaminated hamburger patties are still unknown. The minister of agriculture and rural affairs says his ministry has carried out all the necessary legal procedures and inspections in an unbiased manner.

The whereabouts of more than 11 tons worth of contaminated hamburger patties is still not known, as Agriculture and Rural Affairs Ministry officials deny reports that the 160,000 listeria-contaminated meat patties were consumed by more than 50 dogs.
According to the Taraf daily, a chain of negligence has been established regarding the missing patties -- believed to be contaminated by listeria and salmonella -- and the case has now been referred to a public prosecutors office for thorough investigation. The scandal emerged after Erzurum-based TT Gıda -- a company that supplies meat to Burger King through the supply company Fasdat Gıda -- filed a complaint with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in June. TT Gida had sent the meat to Fasdat Gıda, which claimed the meat was contaminated and cancelled its agreement with the meat producer. TT Gıda requested that the meat be returned, but Fasdat Gıda said that it had been sent to Zeybek Solid Waste Center for safe disposal.

TT Gıda attempted to locate the meat at the waste facility, but could not find the center. The company subsequently filed a complaint with the Agriculture Ministry. Ministry officials contacted the waste center and were eventually told that the meat had been sent to a Kangal dog farm in Bursa. The farm’s manager, Şeref Alkan, said the meat was consumed by 55 dogs over a two month-period from May 5 to July 7.

The officials recorded Alkan’s statement and suggested that it was not possible for such a large amount of meat to be consumed by the dogs on the farm over the two-month period.

Süleyman Çambaşı from the ministry’s Inspection Board wrote a report regarding the case’s developments and sent it to Agriculture Minister Mehdi Eker. Çambaşı pointed out that the meat may be on the market. Officials from Zeybek Solid Waste Center said that Fasdat Gıda did not inform them that the meat was contaminated and claimed that Fasdat Gıda officials were present when the meat was delivered to the farm. Fasdat Gıda officials, on the other hand, claim that they were unaware that the meat was sent to the farm, and discovered after one month that the meat had been sent to the dog farm.

Experts say the ministry should have been informed before the meat was disposed of. Zeybek officials claim that they had informed the ministry, but no officials came to inspect the meat.

Salmonella is a microscopic living organism that can pass from the feces of people or animals to other people or animals.

It causes food poisoning and diarrhea in humans and can possibly be fatal. Listeriosis, a serious infection caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium listeria monocytogenes, is a serious public health problem.

Minister: We do not favor any company when carrying out legal procedures

Agriculture and Rural Affairs Minister Eker told the Anatolia news agency that the ministry has carried out all necessary legal procedures and inspections in an unbiased manner.

Eker also said it is not likely that the contaminated patties were consumed by the dogs. He highlighted that they have referred the case to legal institutions, filing a criminal complaint with a public prosecutor for the incident to be investigated thoroughly.
