Domingo has been affiliated with the Los Angeles opera company since starring in its inaugural production of “Otello” in 1986. He was named artistic director in 2000 and general director in 2003.“As an artist who has been committed to the growth and development of LA Opera since its earliest days, I find my position here both creatively challenging and deeply rewarding, and I am proud to call this company home,” Domingo said in a statement. LA Opera said Domingo, 69, had renewed his contract as general director until 2013 with a provision that the contract will renew automatically thereafter by mutual consent.
Domingo is best known as one of “The Three Tenors” alongside Luciano Pavarotti and Jose Carreras who performed concerts together in the 1990s and early 2000s. LA Opera’s 25th anniversary season opens on Sept. 23 with the world premiere of Daniel Catan’s “Il Postino,” based on the 1994 film and starring Domingo as the poet Pablo Neruda.
