Kayseri children went to collect candy, never returned

On Sept. 21, 2009, the second day of Eid al-Fitr, 9-year-old Ahmet Tuna Tekin, 6-year-old Dilruba Tekin and 11-year-old Türkan Ay went outside to collect candy but never returned home. Police and gendarmerie teams searched the central Kayseri and surrounding districts as well as nearby fields, but no traces of the children were found.

The families of Türkan Ay, Ahmet Tuna Tekin and Dilruba Tekin, who went missing last year in Kayseri on Sept. 21 -- the second day of Eid al-Fitr -- will mark Eid this year without their children.

Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, Leyla Tekin, the mother of Dilruba Tekin, said the coming of Eid has intensified their suffering. She explained that her children have been missing for close to one year and noted that they have not received any news -- good or bad -- about the whereabouts or condition of the children.

“My husband suffered two heart attacks, unable to bear the sorrow of the loss of our children. We are going through a very difficult time. We have not lost hope that we will find our children. I call on those who kidnapped them: Please, let them go. Let us celebrate two holidays this Eid. If our children are released this holiday, only then can we celebrate it. If not, our suffering will only grow more on this holiday.”

With tears in her eyes, Tekin recalled that schools will open soon and said: “My children are not going to be able to go to school this year, either. Their school clothes and backpacks are waiting for them in their bedrooms.” Türkan Ay’s mother, Özlem Ay, also said their pain grows with every passing day. “Without my daughter, it doesn’t matter if the holiday is here or not for us.” Her father, İbrahim Ay, adds, “How can we celebrate when our daughter is missing?”

Rumors have taken a toll on his morale, he said, adding that “people come up to me while I am walking in the street and say to me: ‘Please accept my condolences. We heard that the children’s bodies have been found,’ or ‘Is it true that the doorman who killed the kids has been found?’ These kinds of rumors are very distressing and disturbing. I don’t know if my child is alive or if she has been killed. This uncertainty is very painful.”

A police team supported by members of the community visited the Tekin and Ay families at their homes in the Yenidoğan neighborhood of Talas, Kayseri province, on Wednesday.
