Davutoğlu to attend Gymnich meeting during Eid al-Fitr

9 September 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu will continue working during Eid al-Fitr, a three-day religious holiday, which starts today and marks the end of a month of fasting.

Following a hectic tour in the Anatolian provinces during the past month as part of a campaign to gain support for the constitutional reform package to be voted on Sept. 12, Davutoğlu will be in Brussels tomorrow and on Saturday, the second and last day of Eid al-Fitr. The minister will participate in an informal meeting of European Union foreign ministers -- known as “Gymnich” since the first meeting was held during the German presidency in 1974 at Gymnich Castle north of Bonn.

The meeting in Brussels will be hosted by Belgium, the current president of the EU. As usual, the EU foreign ministers will exchange views regarding the EU and its future as well as current international issues during the meeting.

Davutoğlu will also attend a working breakfast on Saturday together with foreign ministers from other candidate countries and have an exchange of views with his counterparts from the EU on regional and international issues, the Foreign Ministry announced in a written statement. He will also have bilateral meetings with his EU counterparts on the sidelines of the meeting, the statement added.
