Col. Çiçek breaks hunger strike upon daughter’s request

7 September 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The daughter of jailed Col. Dursun Çiçek has announced that her father has agreed to break his hunger strike upon “seeing her tears.”

“When I saw my father at the visitors’ room of the [Hasdal] prison, he looked exhausted. He had difficulty speaking. His condition affected me deeply. He was aware that his decision [for a hunger strike] would hurt both himself and us. But he wanted to draw attention to what is going on in the judiciary,” İrem Çiçek, a lawyer by profession, told reporters.

The colonel made public his decision to go on a hunger strike on Sept. 1, after his appeal for release from prison was rejected by an İstanbul court. He was arrested in April on coup charges.

İrem Çiçek said her father was determined to continue his hunger strike until he saw her tears. “When I realized his decisiveness I started to cry. He was deeply affected. He promised to break the strike as he wiped away my tears. I thanked him, and we hugged each other,” she noted.
