Turkey’s contemporary art archive goes online at artchive.org.tr

7 September 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
Turkey’s contemporary artists will now be able to have their entire catalogs collectively stored on the Internet thanks to a massive online database called “artchive: Contemporary Art Memory.”
Commissioned with support from the İstanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency, artchive is gathering objective, encyclopedic information to assemble a massive online portfolio of Turkey’s contemporary artists, available to all art enthusiasts, the Anatolia news agency reported on Sunday.

The website, www.artchive.org.tr, is particularly aimed at assembling a comprehensive and shared online database in the field of art, which Turkey has lacked to date. Individuals and institutions specializing in art are also lending support to the construction of the archive, where 200 artists’ portfolios had been included as of Sunday. No curatorial selections are made while including an artist’s catalog in the database. As submissions are made, the website will expand to become a quality source material for researchers and enthusiasts alike.

The website, apart from artists’ portfolios, also includes information on art spaces and current contemporary art exhibitions.
