Hamzaçebi says he fell victim to conspiracy in affair video

6 September 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy Akif Hamzaçebi, whose alleged affair with a woman was posted on a website last month, argued that the woman in the video must have uploaded the video but added that she could be a part of a larger conspiracy against him.

Hamzaçebi filed a criminal complaint against Safiye Küçük on the grounds that she made use of his “personal weakness,” but he said there could be others involved in a “conspiracy plotted against him” and requested that others involved in the incident be exposed.

Hamzaçebi said the conspiracy against him occurred on the second day of the CHP's national congress in May, when he first met Küçük. He said that the video was recorded on July 2 when Küçük invited him to her house for coffee. Hamzaçebi added that he did not see Küçük again after that day.

Hamzaçebi, known to be close to the party's new leader, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who came to power after Deniz Baykal was pressured to resign in May, seems to be in close contact with Küçük in the recording that was posted on the yourfilelink.com website on Aug. 9. Hamzaçebi is married and has a child.

In May, habervaktim.com broadcast a two-part video without audio allegedly featuring Baykal and CHP deputy Nesrin Baytok. The recordings seemed to have been made using hidden cameras, one of which was placed in a wardrobe. Baykal announced his immediate resignation from party leadership amid fallout from the video clip and pointed to the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) as being responsible for the emergence of the video.

According to backstage talk, the pro-Kılıçdaroğlu wing within the party sees the pro-Baykal wing as responsible for Hamzaçebi's video since Küçük is an acquaintance of CHP deputy Yılmaz Ateş, known to be close to Baykal.
