6 September 2010 / MEHMET ALTAN STAR ,
In the speech he gave in Diyarbakır last week, Prime Minister Erdoğan said: “Our job is not done with the reform package. We are now laying the foundations of a more extensive constitutional change in 2011.
We are opening the door here and taking that step.” Little time is left before the general elections. I hope the reform package, which brings restricted, delayed and insufficient change to the Constitution of the 1980 coup, will get a strong “yes” vote in the referendum and that this promise for a new constitution will not be forgotten as it has been in the past. I want a strong hope for a “new Turkey” to be revived. If the principled politics of change are taken as a guide, the formula of the “new Turkey” is very clear: to eliminate the 1980 coup regime and speed up EU reforms.
