US takes on Angola, Russia faces NZ in today’s quarters

6 September 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
The action in the round of 16 at the 2010 FIBA World Championship continues with two games today at İstanbul’s Sinan Erdem Dome. The opening match pits the US against Angola, while Russia will clash with New Zealand in the night game.

Missing all the players from its 2008 Olympics gold-medal winning “Redeem Team” -- which included Kobe Bryant, Dwayne Wade and LeBron James -- the US finished Group B in top place before advancing to the knock-out stage. The undersized and inexperienced US team has not lost any games so far and they are not expected to suffer a defeat against Angola, either. The only serious challenge to the Americans came from Brazil, which they edged out 70-68. African champion Angola became the opponent of the US after taking fourth place in Group A, where they beat Jordan and Germany. The Angolans have made it to the top 16 for the second straight world championship. The game is set to take place at 6 p.m.

In today’s late game, Russia takes on New Zealand at 9 p.m. Russia finished Group C in second place after they beat Greece. New Zealand’s “Tall Blacks” took third place in Group D after Lithuania and Spain, after a last-second three pointer against France.
