Yıldız lays foundation for immense Çankırı thermal plant

3 September 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Taner Yıldız laid the foundation of a thermal power plant that is expected to provide employment to 3,000 people in a ceremony in the central Anatolian province of Çankırı on Wednesday.

The thermal plant, which is now being constructed by Yıldızlar SSS Holding, is expected to cost a total of $600 million. Yıldız said Yıldızlar SSS Holding is a strong company and that they will be able to finish the construction within three years.

“As the global economic crisis still lingers and some countries announce bankruptcy, these investments take place [in Turkey]. Turkey keeps on growing. We do not have a market problem. The electricity produced here will be consumed in Turkey. … Electricity must be produced through renewable resources in Turkey. We give priority to local sources. We will provide growth at the hands of the private sector and we will work for the private sector to invest their savings in this sector again,” Yıldız said at the ceremony.

Also speaking at the event, Yıldızlar SSS Holding CEO Sabahattin Yıldız announced that they plan to make three more investments in Çankırı. The province’s governor, Şemsettin Uzun, said, “This $600 million project will provide hope for thousands of people.” Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Çankırı deputies Nurettin Akman and Suat Kınıklıoğlu, as well as Çankırı Mayor İrfan Dinç, were also in attendance at the ceremony.
