Öcalan: I’m at the state’s service

3 September 2010 / MEHMET METINER STAR,
When outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan was captured in 1999, he said he would be at the state’s service. He even said he was ready to serve the state.
It is obvious what state Öcalan is serving. As a person who has carefully followed the messages Öcalan sent through his lawyers from his jail on İmralı Island since his capture, I can comfortably say that the state Öcalan is serving is the deep state represented by members of the military. As a matter of fact, all statements Öcalan made at the time overlapped with the military’s sensitivities. Öcalan targeted the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) instead of the state because the AK Party in a paradoxical way saw Öcalan and its terrorist organization confronting it when it opened the way before the expansion of democratic and cultural rights.
