"Constitutional amendment first step towards Turkey's more democratization, modernization"

2 September 2010 / THE ANATOLIA NEWS AGENCY, BRUSSELS
The European Parliament Rapporteur for Turkey Ria Oomen-Ruijten said Wednesday the Constitutional amendment was the first step towards Turkey's more democratization and modernization and that everyone had to cast a vote at the upcoming referendum in Turkey.

In a written statement, Oomen-Ruijten said that she was deeply saddened after certain Turkish political parties made a call on supporters to boycott the referendum.

It is a democratic principle for all to express thoughts, Oomen-Ruijten said.

I call on all Turkish citizens to vote at the September 12 referendum, Oomen-Ruijten said in her statement.

The Constitutional amendment will help boost the welfare of Turkey and her people, Oomen-Ruijten said.

Reminding that the Turkish Parliament approved the Constitutional amendment and that the Turkish Constitutional Court reviewed the amendment, Oomen-Ruijten said that "every citizen must be able to give a message by using the right to say 'yes' or 'no'".
