A group of women who represent 29 civil society associations of women in Turkey’s east and southeast announced that they will vote ‘yes’ for the reform package that will be voted on in a referendum on Sept. 12. Şehadet Çitil, who made a statement yesterday on behalf of the group in Diyarbakır, called on women to approve the reform package in order “not to shed tears from now on.”

Çitil said the package is promising, adding that society will for the first time go to the polls to approve a constitutional amendment package prepared by the nation’s representatives.

“We demand a civilian constitution that allows more freedoms and includes more people. But this package, which would bring important changes, is a big step on the way to democratization because it will make an important change in a constitution that is the product of the Sept. 12, 1980 military coup,” she said.

She also referred to changes to Article 10 of the Constitution that will result in the principle of legal positive discrimination and make claims of discrimination illegal in that regard.
