Fishermen throw nets into water as fishing season begins

Fishermen in Trabzon were able to catch large amounts of bluefin tuna after they cast their nets into the sea.

With the start of the fishing season on Tuesday night, fisherman across Turkey headed out to the water on the same night, hoping to fill their nets.

Fishermen sailed off into the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara from ports in İstanbul’s Kumkapı, Sarıyer, Rumeli Feneri and Mimarsinan districts. After the first fishing trip of the season, fishermen returned to fish markets in Kumkapı during the early morning hours. They were able to catch some bluefin tuna and sardines. Merchants who had arrived at the fish markets early bought the newly caught fish.

In Trabzon, fishermen were able to catch large amounts of bluefin tuna after they cast their nets into the sea, following some preliminary checks using sonar equipment. In addition to bluefin, Trabzon fishermen also caught whiting, picarel and bluefish.

Trabzon Fisheries Cooperative member, Yakup Uzun said the first catch of the season was better than expected. “Throughout the night, we were in contact with the other fishermen in the Black Sea. There were more fish than we expected in our nets. During our observations in the Black Sea in the months of July and August, we saw that this year’s fishing season will be a promising one. The signs we get from the sea show that this fishing season will be very bountiful. We are particularly hopeful about the bluefin tuna,” he said.

Uzun said some fishermen were afraid that the abundance of tuna fish would endanger anchovy hunting, which will begin one-and-a-half months later, because tuna fish feed on anchovy; however, he said such fears were unfounded.

“Yes, tuna fish feed on anchovy, but my 40-year-long experience as a fisherman shows that the abundance of tuna fish means an abundance of anchovies. So, I am very hopeful about anchovy fishing, too,” explained Uzun.

He also noted that the price of fish will fall as fishermen catch more in the upcoming days, which will also prompt a decline in the prices of red and white meat.
