Turkey takes on China in their last group match

2 September 2010 / ESRA MADEN, İSTANBUL
Host Turkey had no time to savor its historic victory over eternal rival and neighbor Greece on Tuesday before taking on South American side Puerto Rico last night. Turkey will play China in their last Group C match at the Ankara Arena this evening.

As the FIBA World Basketball Championship continues for a sixth day, each of the participating teams has played four games, and the groups will be finished with this evening’s matches. The host nation wants to clinch another win by defeating China to secure their place on top of Group C before they play Round 16, which is set to take place on Sept. 4-7. Turkey, which is without Utah Jazz center Mehmet Okur, relies on NBA stars Phoenix Suns’ Hidayet “Hedo” Türkoğlu and Milwaukee Bucks’ Ersan İlyasova, who scored 26 points against Greece. Other Group C games of the day include an encounter between Greece and Russia, both of which were defeated by Turkey, at 6:30 p.m. Earlier in the day, Puerto Rico squares off against the weakest link in the group, Cote d’Ivoire, at 4 p.m. in Ankara.

Group A pits Argentina against Serbia in what is expected to be a thriller at Kayseri’s Kadir Has Arena at 7 p.m. After the first three games in the group, undefeated Argentina stands at the top, while Serbia lost to Germany in a European derby. A Dirk Nowitzki-less Germany, which was defeated by Argentina and by Australia, takes on Jordan at 9:30 p.m. Another Group A encounter features Angola against Australia at 4:30 p.m. in Kayseri.

The Americans take to the court in a Group B game against Tunisia at İstanbul’s Abdi İpekçi Arena at 4:30 p.m. Not suffering a single defeat in the first three games of the tournament, the US team was only seriously challenged by Brazil in Monday’s match. Unlucky Brazil lost the game in the tense final few minutes, having two chances to send the game to overtime. The Brazilians are coached by Ruben Magnano, who earlier led Argentina to victories over the US in the 2002 Worlds and the 2004 Olympics, was close to inflict another pain on the Americans. The South American side takes on Croatia, which had one victory -- against Iran, before taking on Tunisia on Wednesday, this evening at 9:30 p.m. In another Group B match, Slovenia faces Iran at 7 p.m.

Defending European and world champion Spain takes on North American side Canada at 4 p.m. at İzmir’s Halkapınar Arena. Surprisingly, the Spaniards, one of the top favorites in the tournament, suffered two defeats in their first three games at the hands of France and Lithuania. Group D also pits New Zealand, which is vying to keep its hopes alive for the Round of 16, against France at 9 p.m. Despite missing their San Antonio playmaker and triple NBA champion Tony Parker, the European side won the first three games in the groups, including a sensational victory over Spain, and it holds the top spot of Group D before playing against another undefeated European, Lithuania, Wednesday evening. Lithuania takes on Lebanon this evening at 6:30 p.m. in İzmir.
