Muslims call upon God by over 99 names

31 August 2010 / ,
Muslims are told in their holy book, “And [all] the Most Beautiful Names belong to God, so call on Him by them ... ” (Quran 7:180) It is not uncommon for Muslims to memorize the 99 “names of God” to recite as a form of worship, sometimes using tasbih prayer beads.

The most commonly used of these names is Allah -- The One God. There is a tradition relayed from the Prophet Muhammad, who said, “God has 99 names, one hundred less one; whoever learns them will enter Paradise.” (Reported by Bukhari) By learning, it means memorizing the names, understanding their meanings and acting upon them, in addition to calling upon God by them. For example, a Muslim who learns the name of God Al-Raheem (the Most Merciful), he will maintain high spirits and not despair of God’s mercy or lose hope, no matter what the circumstances. The names are also used in prayer, such as calling upon God Al-Ghafur (the All-Forgiving), as such: “O All Forgiving, forgive me.” The names of God exceed the 99 mentioned above.
