65 kg of explosives seized in Diyarbakır

30 August 2010 / TODAY'S ZAMAN WITH WIRES, İSTANBUL
Officers from the Diyarbakır Police Department yesterday seized 65 kilograms of explosives in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır. Counterterrorism units from the Diyarbakır Police Department seized the explosives, allegedly placed in a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage tank by outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) members. Police apprehended three individuals suspected of connections to the explosives. An investigation is under way.

Diyarbakır Governor Mustafa Toprak told Anatolia News Agency yesterday that police discovered that the PKK had planned to use the bombs as part of a campaign of sensational terrorist attacks. The bomb was placed inside an LPG tank, he said.

Diyarbakır Police Chief Mustafa Sağlam also alleged that PKK members were planning to carry out attacks in major cities.

“The explosives which were prepared by operatives of the separatist terrorist organization in Diyarbakır’s rural areas were to be transported to terrorists preparing to carry out bomb attacks in big cities.”

Sağlam said the explosives seized were very similar to plastic explosive seized in the Ergani district early this month, weighing 64 kilograms. “The bomb seized in Ergani was ready to use, but this needed final touches. That is the only difference,” he said. Earlier this month, police officers from the Diyarbakır Police Department averted potential disaster when they followed up on an anonymous tip-off regarding a bomb-laden vehicle in the Ergani district. The bomb, which was also found inside a LPG tank, reportedly contained explosives powerful enough to bring down a five-story building, police said.
