Bread price to see increase after Ramadan

30 August 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
Agriculturalists’ Association of Turkey (TZD) President İbrahim Yetkin has announced that the price of bread will increase after the holy month of Ramadan. In a press conference at the İçkale Hotel in Ankara, Yetkin stated on Sunday that the increase in prices for flour, water, oil and natural gas forces bread producers to increase bread prices. He suggested that the state offer oil and natural gas at a lower price so that bakers will reconsider an increase in prices.
According to the TZD president, around 12 tons of bread are consumed every year in Turkey. “Bread consumption increases in poor regions while it decreases in rich areas,” he noted. Yetkin also said the price of simit, traditional Turkish sesame-covered bread rings that are generally consumed during breakfast, will also see an increase after Ramadan. There were also claims that bread prices would increase before the start of Ramadan, but bread producers denied such claims. Food prices usually see an increase during Ramadan in Turkey.
