Gen. Işık Koşaner, who was recently appointed as Turkey’s chief of General Staff, assumed the post on Friday following a handover ceremony held at the General Staff headquarters in Ankara.
Former Land Forces Commander Gen. Koşaner was appointed as the new top military commander after a separate decree on his appointment bearing the signatures of former Chief of General Staff Gen. İlker Başbuğ and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan were approved by President Abdullah Gül at midnight on Aug. 9. His post, along with that of the new land forces commander, had been left unfilled at the end of the annual Supreme Military Council (YAŞ) meeting that ended on Aug. 4 after the government and the military disagreed over who would lead the ground forces. After eight days of tense debates between the military and the civilian government, Gen. Erdal Ceylanoğlu was appointed to head Turkey’s land forces and Gen. Koşaner was named the new military chief. He handed over the post of the Land Forcers commander to Gen. Ceylanoğlu during a ceremony on Wednesday.Gen. Koşaner will be the Republic of Turkey’s 27th chief of General Staff. He will remain in office for three years.
Koşaner was promoted to full general status in 2004 and served as the commander of the Turkish Aegean Army until 2005. He was assigned as the deputy chief of General Staff in 2005 and he assumed this post for a year. After serving for two years as the Gendarmerie General Commander, Koşaner was promoted to the Land Forces Command in 2008 and has remained at the helm of the command since then.
