A prophetic prescription for anger management

28 August 2010 / ,
As Muslims swelter under the hot summer sun this Ramadan, many imams and preachers are reaching into the pages of the traditions of the Prophet Muhammad to advise the masses on controlling their tempers and maintaining courtesy during the holy month, when Muslims should be on their best behavior.
In some of his advice on anger management for Muslims, the Prophet Muhammad said, “The strong is not the one who overcomes people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in anger.” He is also reported to have said, “The best of you are those who are slow to anger and swift to cool down.” The Prophet recommends that when Muslims are angry, they take the following steps to regain control of the situation and prevent any escalation: “Anger is a burning coal. Don’t you see your eyebrows wide and eyes reddish? If any one of you gets angry, let him sit down if he is standing. If his anger goes away, [that is good], otherwise let him lie down.” Muslims are also recommended to speak little while angry.
