Vakıfbank to open branch in Arbil before yearend

21 August 2010 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, İSTANBUL
State-owned Vakıfbank will open a branch in Arbil, northern Iraq, the general manager of the bank, Süleyman Kalkan, has said.

The bank received preliminary approval to open a branch from northern Iraq’s regional administration and is currently waiting for preparations in Turkey to be completed. The branch is expected to be opened before yearend, Kalkan noted yesterday in a meeting with reporters. Vakıfbank also plans to open another branch in Syria, he said.

Arbil has recently seen an increase in interest from Turkish banks eager to benefit from the increasing trade between Turkey and northern Iraq. Ziraat Bankası, İş Bankası, Kuveyt Türk and Albaraka Türk previously unveiled plans to open branches in the city.

“The bank hired 900 employees this year; 300 of them are senior or junior bankers,” he stated, adding that the bank is considering employing 600 to 1,000 people this year following an exam to be held in September.
