Lawyers for Cem Garipoğlu, who is accused of the brutal murder and decapitation of his girlfriend, have said he surrender to police after evading them for 197 days last year because he felt guilty over the situation he had left his father in.

Garipoğlu faces 18 to 24 years in prison if convicted of the murder of his girlfriend, Münevver Karabulut, whose body was found in a trash bag in a dumpster with her severed head in a guitar case atop her corpse in March 2009.

Garipoğlu’s father was jailed as a suspected accessory to the murder when Cem was on the run. Lawyer Aytekin Kaya said the suspect felt guilty due to his father’s situation and that he surrendered to police because he felt deeply sorry about his father being in jail and no longer wanted him to be there. His father was released pending trial in April.
